Proof of Citizenship Records

Košice County, 1924-1928

Data compiled and transcribed by Peter Absolon

This database contains 1741 Jewish names, taken from 3 volumes of archival documents ÒEvidencia vydaných osvedčen’ o št‡tnom občianstveÓ (Evidence of Issued Proofs of Citizenship) found during my research at Slovak State Archive in Kosice (Št‡tny arch’v v Košiciach).

Introduction

Košice County (Košick‡ župa) was established in 1923 and lasted until 1928 when the Czechoslovak government eliminated the county divisions in Slovakia. Košice county covered all of eastern Slovakia bounded by Poland to the north, Hungary on the south extending east to Subcarpathia (now Ukraine). The county included the cities of Košice and Prešov and comprised 17 districts.

During the period from 1924 to 1928, the county offices issued thousands of Òproofs of citizenshipÓ that were used to create this database, which lists records for those with Jewish names.  The place names are identified by their contemporary Slovak variants as well as the Hungarian name equivalents, which were entered separately to allow the records to be searchable using either version.

The Database

The database includes the following fields:

á       Record number

á       Document number

á       Surname

á       Given name

á       Occupation

á       Place of residence

á       Place of birth

á       Birth date

á       Official domicile ("domovska prislusnost")

á       Comment

Although the data donÕt show any family relations, they contain exact birth date and place of an individual. This is especially useful when vital records for a particular village or town do not exist, which makes these records a unique source of exact genealogical data.
