The Jeff Malka Sephardic Collection

The Jews of Egypt
from the book: Fargeon, Maurice. Les Juifs d'Egypte des origines a nos jours. Cairo, 1938.

This book is a comprehensive study of the history of the Jews who lived in Egypt from the time of the Pharaohs to the date of its publication in 1938.

For genealogical purposes, there is one restriction: the present index did not take in account the first part of the book dealing with ancient times but only covers the second part, which covers from the 10th century to modern times history and is divided by community. Needless to say that the major portion treats with the 19th century and the first 40 years of the 20th - ten years before the disintegration of the Jewish community of Egypt which had lived there for millennia.

The index includes 1123 persons.

Acknowledgements

We acknowledge the tremendous contributions and lifelong dedication of Mathilde Tagger, z"l who made this index available. For many years, and right until her untimely death, Mathilde Tagger was a very close friend and collaborator with Jeff Malka. Together they worked to promote Sephardic genealogy research and educate the public about its enormous potential. The source of this material is: Annuaire des Juifs d'Egypte 1942-1943.

In addition, we express our grateful appreciation to Dr. Jeff Malka for his monumental ongoing effort to collect and make accessible Sephardic genealogical information, and for his generosity in contributing his extraordinarily valuable collection to JewishGen.
