Background

This database includes the names of Holocaust victims who were citizens of Dortmund (Westphalia) between 1933 and 1945.  In addition to the individuals on this list, there were 110 Jewish citizens who were deported from Dortmund, but survived ghettos, camps and the war.

There were four deportation-transports from Dortmund:

  • 27-Jan-1942 — to the ghetto of Riga (Latvia)
  • 30-Apr-1942 — to the ghetto of Zamosc (Generalgouvernement)
  • 27-Jul-1942 — to Theresienstadt
  • 02-Mar-1943 — to Auschwitz

Database

This database contains 2,078 deportees.  The fields for this database are as follows:

  • Surname
  • Given Name
  • Maiden Name
  • Date of Birth
  • Place of Birth
  • Date, place, and estination of Deportation.  (See Note A below)
Note A: The information in this field is to be read as follows:

»1938 Bentschen« deported during the so called “Polenaktion” on 28 October 1938 to Bentschen/Zbąszyń at the Polish border, no further information, except that the person did not survive.  Involved were altogether about 600 citizens of Dortmund with Polish citizenship. 
»Riga/Zamosc/Theresienstadt/Auschwitz« deported from Dortmund to one of these ghettos/camps on the date mentioned above.
»Theresienstadt, Auschwitz (15.05.1944)« deported from Dortmund to Theresienstadt on the date mentioned above, further deported from Theresienstadt to Auschwitz on the date in brackets.
»Belgien, Auschwitz (ab Mechelen 26.09.1942). 21.10.1942« the person fled to Belgium, was arrested after the German occupation, deported from the central Belgian “Sammellager” in Mechelen/Malines to Auschwitz and killed there on 21. October 1942.
