List of Displaced Persons Emigrating to The United States and South America (1944 – 1945)

BACKGROUND
The Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS) is the world’s oldest
refugee agency, formally incorporated in 1903. HIAS emerged from the
work of several agencies which supported Jews fleeing pogroms in
Russia and Eastern Europe beginning in the 1880s.
This data set comes from records of HIAS’s work in France during
the war years. HIAS provided assistance to refugees in the form of
legal support, monetary aid, and family reunification services, among
other things, during this timeframe.
DATABASE
This database includes 4,472 records of displaced persons that
emigrated to the United States and South America.
The fields for this database are as follows:
- Set # - There are two sets of source documents within the website
- Image # (Scan image number within the YIVO folder)
- Surname
- Given name
- Date of birth
- Place of birth
- Nationality
- Occupation (Please see https://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/germanoccs.htm JewishGen Info File for translations of occupations from German to English)
- Source (List #)
- Comments
Set #1 seems to have multiple scans of the same
lists, in part or in whole. There might be some small differences in
the individual scans so all copies are included in this database.
