This database includes 10,761 records from the tax lists of the Piotrków Trybunalski Ghetto, 1940-1942.

Background

The Piotrków Trybunalski ghetto was established by the occupying German authorities in October 1939.  It is often referred to as the first ghetto in Nazi-occupied territory in Europe.  An estimated 5,000 to 6,000 people lived in the ghetto area before the war.  Jews from elsewhere in Poland moved to Piotrków, and the number of ghetto residents rose to about 28,000.  In October 1942, some 22,000 Jews from the ghetto were shipped in boxcars to Treblinka where they were murdered.

This database is comprised of names listed from handwritten sheets of paper that note each individual's payment of taxes during the period from 1940 to early 1942.
