Browse the VM archive to view user-generated images of Jewish historical subjects, documents, culture and places, up close. A new response feature now allows you to add your response to those older, often unanswered archived images. Please respond with relevant information when you can. Here's how. Sort the first column (VM ID) by clicking on the column title for the oldest or the latest images. Select an image. Next click "Add Response".

Alternatively, narrow your search by clicking "Search Archive," above, and type specific search terms.

Your input deserves our thanks and praise, for it may help a Gen'er in new and rewarding ways.
Countless unnamed and dedicated volunteers from across the globe deserve our gratitude. They freely offer their time and skills responding to ViewMate requests. Giving to others will come back to them.

Note: Viewmate's first saved image is #227.

To sort by a column, click the column title. Then click the sort icon [D] to reverse the order.
You will be able to view responses online if available. Items will open in a new browser window.

27681 Translation - Yiddish

6/16/2013 4:21 PM This badly faded page comes from a siddur that belonged to my grandmother. I suspect these are the dates of births and deaths of family members. If even a small section is clear enough to be translated, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

27682 Interpretation

6/16/2013 4:21 PM This marriage certificate has already been uploaded here and the names therein have been identified as Groom: Lejzor WEJLAND, widower, Bride: Zelda Szulewiczowna CHUDY, widow, 28, living in Wohyn

My question: does that mean we can infer Zelda's maiden name was Szulewiczowna and her late husband was a Chudy? Did widows keep their married names or revert to maiden? Also, it has been suggested that "Srul" is actually Zelda's father's name and her last name is garbled as part of that long word. Any thoughts? Thank you very much.

27582 Sharing Document

6/16/2013 4:18 PM This is a divorce document issued in Hannover on 1910. Surnames are blanked out to keep privacy. I have some problems reading the old German handwriting.
I'd like to have a full text transcription of this hand-written document into German.
Many thanks in advance

25734 Tombstone

6/16/2013 4:18 PM Can anyone translate the Hebrew on this stone? I know it is really hard to read and I'm hoping to get a chance to go to the cemetery myself and take a better photo or at least copy it by hand. I'm most interested in learning his father's name, if possible. Also, any confirmation of the date on the bottom or his age would be great! My records indicate that he died in 1900 or 1901, but 5660 would be 1899.

Thanks!
Robin

27664 Tombstone

6/12/2013 4:59 PM Hoping the words between the lines might be the name of this person's father. It's very faint, so squinting might make it easier to see. I can send a link to more images from different angles on request. View the post with its 3 responses
