Hello,

RE: Harris Tagger

Please can someone kindly translate the Hebrew inscription on my great grandfather's tombstone.

I'm keen to know if their Hebrew or other family member's names are mentioned, so I'm able to trace my father's ancestors who naturalised from Russia, September 1903.

Thanking you in advance.

TZVI son of Reb Dov, he passed away 21 [days]

of the month of Sivan of the year 5706

In the 74th year of his life, to the sorry of his children
and his family.

May his soul be bound up in the bond of life.

'Reb' is an honorific; it does not mean rabbi.

Tzvi is Hebrew for deer. The Yiddish word for deer is Hirsh. Because of this, some men with the Hebrew name Tzvi have a secular name that sounds similar to Hirsh, such as Harry, Harold, Herbert, etc. Presumably, this is how he came to have the name Harris.

His father's name, Dov, means bear. SOME (certainly not all) men with this Hebrew name have a secular name that sounds similar to bear, such as Bernard, Barry, etc.
