Mrs. GITTEH RACHEL

daughter of Reb Dov

She passed away on the first day of Rosh Chodesh Iyar 5703

May her soul be bound up in the bond of life.

==========================================================
'Reb' is an honorific; it does not mean rabbi.

Her father's Hebrew name was Dov, which mean bears. SOME (certainly not all) men with this name have a secular name that sounds similar to bear, such as Bernard, Barry, etc.

She passed away on the "first day of Rosh Chodesh" Iyar. “Rosh Chodesh”, literally the head of the month, also known as the New Moon, indicates the start of a new month. Rosh Chodesh is either a one-day or a two-day event, depending upon whether the month that has just ended had 29 days, or 30. In this case, the previous month, Nisan, had 30 days. The 30th day was considered the first day of Rosh Chodesh of the month that was just beginning, which was Iyar. The first day of the month just beginning, Iyar, was considered the second day of Rosh Chodesh. Therefore, the exact date of death was the 30th day of the month of Nisan.
