Odessa (Town)Biographical Names Collection, Kharkov Encyclopedia, Odessa1784-1997Name ListsUkraine SIG Website, Downloadable Files
This dataset contains 4 entries for the town of Odessa.

This dataset is a translation of Jewish biographical entries extracted from the online version of
Encyclopedia of Names, Kharkov Province, Volume 1,
by Andrey Fedorovich Paramonov. Mr. Paramonov is Director of the Private Museum of Kharkov City Mansion. He collected the records at the State Archive of Kharkiv Province beginning in 1999. The original text is in Russian.

Ukraine SIG extracted entries that appear to be for Jews and that have a Ukraine connection. With permission of the author, Ukraine SIG volunteers translated the extracted entries using an online copy of the book, as well as additional data provided by the author. A similar, but more extensive set of the data is on the website of the
Center for Genealogical Research (CGR).
A few entries in the Ukraine SIG dataset were not in the original list published by A.F. Paramonov, but only on the CGR website.

Currently the dataset has 379 entries. Of these, 339 entries mention 70 different towns in Ukraine. The dataset will be expanded as new translations become available from the CGR and other Russian language websites.

The dataset has been submitted to the JewishGen Ukraine Database. When it becomes available there, researchers will be able to search for given names, surnames, and towns in various combinations. Alternatively,

Odessa (Town)Names List, Head of Household, Odessa1893-1916Name ListsRTR Foundation Website
This index lists 4,505 heads of household (all Jewish, most with patronymics) and their addresses. The original index, in Russian, is on the
Odessa Archives website.

A searchable index also is available on
Miriam Weiner"s Routes to Roots website.
Weiner notes that both indexes are extracts from an archival collection titled Odessa Board for Small Business, Jewish Section, 1894-1918, which is at the Odessa Oblast Archives (Fond 359, Opis 1, Delo 3). She also reports that "the actual documents (in the archives) include address locations and names/ages of family members" and that "the name index was previously published (in the Russian language) in a book entitled The Jews of Odessa and Southern Ukraine: The History in Documents (end of XVIII-Beginning of XX Century), published in Odessa in 2002, jointly by the Odessa Oblast Archives and “Migdal” (Jewish Community in Odessa)." The Archives gave Weiner permission to post the index on her
RTR Foundation website. The RTR Foundation webpage gives instructions for ordering records from the Archives.
