At JewishGen, we are committed to protecting your privacy and maintaining transparency about how we collect, use, and share your information.
Information We Collect
We collect information you voluntarily provide (such as when you register, contribute data, post to discussion groups, or donate), as well as limited technical data automatically (such as your IP address and browser type) to improve site performance and security.
How We Use Your Information
Your information is used to:
- Provide access to JewishGen’s genealogical resources
- Enable connections between researchers with shared interests
- Communicate important updates or respond to your inquiries
- Improve our services and user experience
We do not sell or rent your personal data.
Data Sharing
We only share personal information:
- With your explicit permission
- To forward messages between researchers (without revealing your contact details) — for example, when someone finds a match in the Family Tree of the Jewish People (FTJP), we forward their message to you without giving them your name or address; whether to reply is your decision
When you donate, you choose whether your name appears in our public list of contributors or is listed as Anonymous. Either way, nothing else you provide is shared.
Your Choices
You control what information is visible to others through tools like the JewishGen Family Finder (JGFF) and the Family Tree of the Jewish People (FTJP). In the JGFF, you decide which parts of your contact information, if any, are displayed to other registered users — your email address and telephone number are never shown, and you may choose to display only your JewishGen ID number. You may opt in or out of data visibility and may request to update or delete your information at any time.
Cookies and Tracking
We use cookies and analytics to understand how our site is used and to improve functionality. You may disable cookies in your browser settings, though some features may not work as intended.
