+----------------------------------------------------------------------+ Archival Sources in Kharkov, Ukraine +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ A JewishGen InfoFile Compiled by Vladislav Kiriya and Dmitry Prokopenko and translated by Alexander Kott 1 Mar 2000 The following review of archival sources is very recent: it was compiled based on the experiences of the last couple months (late 1999 - early 2000). It covers specifically the city and "oblast" (region, gubernia) of Kharkov, Ukraine, but is probably somewhat representative of many Ukrainian regions, at least those outside of the former Pale. The list was compiled and provided to me by Vladislav Kiriya and Dmitry Prokopenko: e-mail , and I merely translated it, hopefully without too many misinterpretations. Dmitry and Vlad kindly gave me the permission to post this review on JewishGen. Check with Dmitry and Vlad if you need more information. The following are the archival collections of Kharkov and surrounding area containing information of genealogical interest. Overview: Most of the documents of genealogical interest are found in the State Archive of the Kharkov Oblast. In addition, in the ZAGS Archives of Kharkov City and Oblast one finds the vital records of the Soviet period (i.e, after 1918) until 1970's, and also the vital records of the City Rabbi (!!!) for the period of 1885-1917. ZAGS Archives of individual city precincts contain the vital records from 1970's and until the present time. Some documents of the late Soviet period can be found in the archives of various government agencies, institutions and enterprises. Below we describe the most interesting collections of the State Archive of the Kharkov Oblast. o Documents of the Office of the Kharkov Governor of 1797-1917 include: - Annual reports of the Governor to the Czar regarding the status of the Gubernia; - Information about the composition and migration of the population; - Cases regarding the entry and exit of foreigners, and surveillance of them. o Documents of the Kharkov Gubernia Government, 1790-1917: - Senate's declarations and decisions regarding the assignments of individuals to officially recognized social classes (e.g., merchants, etc.) and expulsions from the same, for the period of 1802-1839. (Note that these records might be of little value to the Jewish genealogists given that there were very few Jews allowed to live in Kharkov in that early period.) - Cases of appointment and expulsion of individuals to/from the classes of Burgers and Clergy; - Awards of honorary titles; - Legal documentation for illegitimate children; - Conversions; - Investigation of religious sects; - Naturalization of foreigners. o Documents of the Kharkov Gubernia Assembly of Nobles and the Office of Leaders of Nobles, 1790-1917: - Genealogy books of the nobles of the Kharkov Gubernia. - Family census of the nobles of the Izyum uezd; - Status of noble estates of the Valkov uezd. (The above is probably of no value to Jewish genealogists, but perhaps these documents mention some Jewish tenants or adminsitrators of the estates) o Documents of the Kharkov City Council (Duma): - Census of city inhabitants of 1811, 1829, 1835; - Cases about appointments of individuals to the classes of burgers, merchants, artisans; - Property Department: Cases regarding the rent of City lands for construction of residential and trading facilities, 1881-1919; - Assessment Department: cases regarding the valuation of privately-owned real estate, 1881-1919; - Accounting Department: lists of merchants by guild, 1905-1918. o Records of Uezd Courts and Circuit Courts and Offices of Notaries of the Circuit Courts 1868-1919: - Records of sales and mortgages of real estate; - Records of land ownership in Kharkov Gubernia; - Lists of landowners and property owners who mortgaged their properties. o Documents of the Kharkov State Office ("Kazennaya Palata") for 1788-1919: - Census ("Revizskie Skazki") for Kharkov City and Gubernia, 1788-1858. o Documents of Kharkov Gubernia Statistics Committee for 1835-1917: - Tables of the City census of 1864, 1873, 1879; - Census forms of the first universal census of 1897. o Regarding the documents of the Soviet period, of particular genealogical interest are: - Lists of the tenants of the houses administered by the Kharkov Rental Authority 1920-1929; - Lists of the citizens deprived of the voting rights; - Cases of the individuals persecuted by the NKVD during the Stalin Purges of 1930's - these cases are currently being transferred from the Kharkov Directorate of the Ukrainian Security Service to the Kharkov Oblast Archive. ---------------- [03Mar2000ak]bik filename UA-khark.txt Copyright 2000 JewishGen Inc. http://www.jewishgen.org +----------------------------------------------------------------------+
