Name:

Posterngate Synagogue

Address and Formation:

Posterngate, off Hull Market Place, Hull.(ii)

The synagogue had been a Roman Catholic chapel sacked by the mob in June 1780 in the anti-Catholic Gordon riots, lead by Lord George Gordon (who subsequently converted to Judaism). It was acquired later that year by five Jewish families, restored and converted into a synagogue.(iii)

Secessionist Congregation:

In 1809, following disagreemens with officials of the congregation, a group of members broke away to form the Parade Row Synagogue.

Closure:

The synagogue was in use until 1826, when the congregation reunited with members of the Parade Row Synagogue to form the Hull Old Hebrew Congregation at Robinson Row.(iv)

The building was probably demolished in 1994.(v)

Lay Officer:

Solomon Meyer was the leader of the congregation and one of the main players in the merger of the congregation into the Hull Old Hebrew Congregation.(vi)
