Welcome to JewishGen's Yizkor Book Project, and to the world of Jewish genealogy. We hope you find this site useful. If you're reading this, you have questions about yizkor books. Here are a few things you should know before you ask.
We at JewishGen and the Yizkor Book Project do not have additional information on names listed in yizkor books or on authors of yizkor books. We don't have copies of the original yizkor books, and so cannot do lookups for you or send you copies of particular pages. The only translations we have are online at http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/translations.html.
If you're wondering where to find a particular book, please check the Yizkor Book Project database, which may be found at http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/database.html. There you will find a listing for each book in the database, along with a list of some of the libraries that have the book. If you're looking to buy a yizkor book, please see our InfoFile on retail establishments that sell yizkor books, at http://www.jewishgen.org/Yizkor/yizret.html.
If you have a question about a particular yizkor book, please make sure you identify the book you are asking about in your request for help! Unfortunately, we are not mind readers, and won't have the vaguest idea which of the 1000+ books in the database has your Great-Uncle Shmuel listed on page 276.
Genealogy is very rewarding and exciting. It also takes a lot of time.
Your time. The dedicated volunteers at JewishGen and the
Yizkor Book Project are working hard to make information available
to you, but:
* we can't do research for you
* we can't get you copies of yizkor books
* we can't translate yizkor books
* we can't translate records, and
* we can't tell you what you should do next.
A good place to start your research is the JewishGen Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). This is the best resource you will ever find for Jewish genealogical research. Go to http://www.jewishgen.org/InfoFiles/faq.html.
JewishGen has also put together an amazing list of InfoFiles, covering every imaginable subject. You can access the InfoFiles at http://www.jewishgen.org/InfoFiles/.
Find out if anyone else is researching the same towns and surnames as you with the JewishGen Family Finder (JGFF), one of the JewishGen's most popular and well-used tools. Search the database and register your own searches at http://www.jewishgen.org/jgff/.
If you're stumped on a genealogical quest, try searching the archives of the JewishGen Discussion Group at http://www.jewishgen.org/wconnect/wc.dll?jg~jgsys~archpop to see if anyone else has posed and answered your question. If you're still stumped, post a call for help to the discussion group. It's a very knowledgeable and generous group of researchers.
Last but not least, subscribe to the some of the wonderful mailing lists and discussion groups available through JewishGen, all of which may be accessed through JewishGen's home page at http://www.jewishgen.org.
Good luck!
