Meteliai

In Yiddish, Metel

Written by Josef Rosin

Translated by Shimon Joffe

A county town in the Alytus district, 11 km. south east of Simnas. In 1797 it had 297 inhabitants, in 66 houses. The number of Jews amongst them is unknown. In 1923 it had 549 inhabitants including 66 Jews. In 1938, Meteliai is mentioned in the list of Jewish craftsmen in Lithuania. After the conquest of Lithuania by the Germans in June 1941, they shared the fate of the other Jews in the surrounding area. They were all murdered in the autumn of that year by Lithuanians in the service of the German authorities.
