Last Name Silbermann or Silbermann 6 #names
My great grandfather’s name was Silbermann or Silvermann and he was born in Palestine- Jerusalem in 1861. I have never been able to go back on the track of his parents and grandparents, with his name Silbermann. I ask if had to change of surname, why , when and where? I know he left Palestine and lived in Kherson in the years 1880-1890 then in Switzerland (la Chaux-de-Fonds) Does anyone know this issue of name changes? Thanks a lot ! I just learned my great grandmother, Feige Charas, married to Hersch Jakob Kessler, passed away in Mezokoveds, Hungary in 1918. 1. I cannot find any online death records for this town for that year. 2. They lived in Lesko, Galicia: what brought them to this town which is so far away? 3. Looking for a place named 'Bogojva' 6 #general
Dear community, I'm hoping to find the place where my grandfather and his family lived. They always said they were from Poland, but I'm aware that the territory might have changed and not be Poland nowadays. They left in 1926 and the ship record says they came from "Bogojva'. Khakhamovitch: Searching for Information #rabbinic
Happy Passover fellow family researchers! I'd like to find more information about the Khakhamovitch/ Hahamovici/ Chachamowicz family. Part of my wife's paternal line - who emigrated from Iasi in Romania to Montreal, Canada - are part of that family. According to Beider's surname dictionaries, the name was taken by "the great-grandson of Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Askenazi" who received the title of Chacham ("wise") during his service in the Ottoman empire. My suspicion is that all people with that surname are descended from that same person and I'd love to make the connection. The Second Edition of Rosenstein's "The Unbroken Chain" has a little information about the family; the Third Edition has the name in the indexes of all of the volumes, but I don't have access to it at the moment. Beyond that I'm in the early stages of collecting information to start piecing together. Any and all pointers to anything related to Rabbi Askenazi, his great-grandson, or anyone with that surname in all of its variations are welcome. TYIA! Russian Naming enquiry: Brothers Itsko and Izik; KOMINKERER Hersh /Hershko Hertzkovich 6 #names #belarus
I have received some records from The Together Plan regrading my research of the KAMINSKY / KOMENKIER family, from Shereshevo, Pruzhany, Grodno (then Russia, today Sarasova, Belarus) 2 early records, Alphabetical lists of Jews of the Pruzhany Jewish Community, 1853 and 1859 listed 3 brothers: Hershko, Itsko and Izik. This record also appears in JewishGen Belarus database. As much as I know both Itsko and Izik names derive from Yitzhak, and I wonder what could be the explanation of this naming of the 2 brothers, who were both alive in 1853. Unless in Russian they are different names? Later on, in 1910 and 1913 Voters Lists and 1912 taxpayer list, appears the names Kominkerer Hershko / Hersh Hertskovich and Kominkerer Shlioma Hertzkovich. As much as I know, “ovich” means “son of”; So what can explain “Hershko Hertzkovich”? Hertzkovich here is not a patronymic surname, and it can’t be “Hershko son of Hertz” because, as much as I know, these are identical names. Could a grandchild carry his father’s patronym? Looking to hire Russian Imperial military expert to find information from ca. 1898-1901 4 #russia
Dear All, It has been a while since I've posted to this group. I am looking for help (even if I have to hire someone) to find and go through any available Imperial Russia military records or journal to find some information from ca. 1898-1901. I can imagine finding someone to access this sort of information inside Russia, particularly at this point in history, may be a challenge or a risk, but I want to ask. My great-grandfather (the only one I knew, albeit barely up to the age of 3), from Lomza gubernia (now Poland), was in the Imperial Cavalry supposedly as an NCO-like leader of a Jewish regiment that was sent out to the east (Manchuria) around the time or just before the Boxer Rebellion. The family story goes that he and his group did not want to follow orders to cut the heads off everyone in a village, so they deserted, robbed a Russo-Chinese bank, and then while his crew went back home, since he was the leader he went farther east, through Japan and eventually to US via Canada. I am sure that much of this is completely true - and i know for a fact this last part is true as we have his train manifest from Montreal and his border crossing). My parents recall there was a 'wanted' poster for him in their last apartment, but it long since vanished. We would still really like to try to learn more and since he was a fugitive I'd have to think there would be some records from that period of time, if not for his 'service.' The only thing we have is a mid-1880s register of him and his brothers with the military (he was only 12 at the time). No photos, no idea of the name of the regiment, or of his official title although again he was supposed to have been their leader (he spoke many languages). A few years ago i corresponded with someone via this group who told me where i might find military journals of that era - they are all in Russian, of course, and difficult for me to penetrate (I have not checked to see if they are still online). There also used to be a Russian military website (www.regiment.ru) but it is defunct at least that address. I had pored through that and there were some candidate regiments (cavalry from that area that went to the far east) but no details or names other than the main man (they might have not listed many Jewish NCO's either). On one such day, just before Pesach, he grew weary of being alone at home and wandered through the market in search of his mother. A peasant girl spots the young boy, with his blond hair and small upturned nose. Wiener Library Talk on Dunera archive holdings #announcements
The UK Dunera Interest Group are hosting an online event in conjunction with the AJR on 20th May 2024 at 8pm (BST). Dr Barbara Warnock of the Wiener Holocaust Library will be talking about holdings in the archives related to the Dunera. The Wiener Library is one of the world’s leading and most extensive archives on the Holocaust. The attached flyer gives further details and has a link to reserve a free ticket to the event. For those unable to attend the talk it will be available on YouTube in due course. NB The infamous Dunera was the ship which deported over 2,000 refugees, who had been interned by the UK Government in summer 1940. The destination was Australia. The treatment on board the Ship was appalling and on arrival the mostly Jewish refugees were interned in various camps in the Australian outback but where their treatment improved. Need help with data from headstone in Yarkon Cemetery in Israel 6 #israel
Several of my POLIMER family are buried in this cemetery. Along with them is "Benjamin/Binyamin Greenspan/Grynszpan." This is from jewishgen's OWBR.
