Browse the VM archive to view user-generated images of Jewish historical subjects, documents, culture and places, up close. A new response feature now allows you to add your response to those older, often unanswered archived images. Please respond with relevant information when you can. Here's how. Sort the first column (VM ID) by clicking on the column title for the oldest or the latest images. Select an image. Next click "Add Response".

Alternatively, narrow your search by clicking "Search Archive," above, and type specific search terms.

Your input deserves our thanks and praise, for it may help a Gen'er in new and rewarding ways.
Countless unnamed and dedicated volunteers from across the globe deserve our gratitude. They freely offer their time and skills responding to ViewMate requests. Giving to others will come back to them.

Note: Viewmate's first saved image is #227.

To sort by a column, click the column title. Then click the sort icon [D] to reverse the order.
You will be able to view responses online if available. Items will open in a new browser window.

19028 Translation - Yiddish

5/22/2011 4:22 PM This letter was recently discovered and appears to be from a relation to my wife's grandmother who stayed behind. We think it is from the late '30s or early '40s. The family was from the Lodz area and we assumed the letter was in Polish but it seems to be Yiddish or German.

We would like an idea of what the letter is about, recognizing the difficulty of interpreting the handwriting, etc.

There are two other pages which I will post and assume to be part of the same letter but that is only a guess.

5/18/2011 4:06 PM This is the reverse of a postcard sent to my grandparents, I believe from members of my grandmother's family. If it is from my grandfather's family, then the location it comes from is Ekaterinoslav (now Dnipropetrovsk), Ukraine. Any translation help will be much appreciated. 17617 Translation - German

5/18/2011 4:05 PM This is the military record of Siegbert Friedmann,my great-grandfather, husband of Ida Kissinger, son of Markus and Babette Hollerbaum Friedmann.
Siegbert was killed in the Holocaust but apparently fought for Germany in WWI. I am very interested to know about the battles he was in and anything about his military record that can be determined from this record. His personal details listed here are already translated.
