Browse the VM archive to view user-generated images of Jewish historical subjects, documents, culture and places, up close. A new response feature now allows you to add your response to those older, often unanswered archived images. Please respond with relevant information when you can. Here's how. Sort the first column (VM ID) by clicking on the column title for the oldest or the latest images. Select an image. Next click "Add Response".

Alternatively, narrow your search by clicking "Search Archive," above, and type specific search terms.

Your input deserves our thanks and praise, for it may help a Gen'er in new and rewarding ways.
Countless unnamed and dedicated volunteers from across the globe deserve our gratitude. They freely offer their time and skills responding to ViewMate requests. Giving to others will come back to them.

Note: Viewmate's first saved image is #227.

To sort by a column, click the column title. Then click the sort icon [D] to reverse the order.
You will be able to view responses online if available. Items will open in a new browser window.

17882 Interpretation

2/16/2011 4:06 PM In the summer of 1929, Abram Spiwak (William on his American passport), traveled back to his homeland in Bessarabia, accompanied by his 18 year old daughter, Lillian. In this photograph, taken in Capresti, I think, Abram poses with a group of women. I think they are members of his family who did not emigrate to America. Lil is at the center. I am trying to identify the other three women in the photo: could two of them be Abram's "missing" sisters, Sore Vollman (who would have been 10 years or more older than Abram) and Dvore (whose married name no one knows, and who was just a few years older than Abram)? Does anyone recognize these women? Can anyone comment on what little is visible of the house, their clothes, or the setting? When Abram returned to the US after this trip, he moved his Landsmen to tears with a vivid account of the terrible conditions for Jews in Romania at this time. View the post, there are no responses

17995 Translation - Polish

2/13/2011 5:31 PM This is a sworn declaration provided for the 1837 wedding of Royza Katoliczka, also known as Ruzycka. I would like a translation of as much of the facts about her as possible; where was she born, who were her parents, and was she married previously ? Also, I would like to know if the text provides any clue about the origin of the family. View the post with its 1 response

17998 Tombstone

2/13/2011 5:31 PM We would appreciate your help with this tombstone.
If you don't mind, could you do the translation line by line so we can learn from it.

If some of the Hebrew letters are hard to read, I can send an enhanced image and/or what I think are the correct letters written out as a word document.
