Browse the VM archive to view user-generated images of Jewish historical subjects, documents, culture and places, up close. A new response feature now allows you to add your response to those older, often unanswered archived images. Please respond with relevant information when you can. Here's how. Sort the first column (VM ID) by clicking on the column title for the oldest or the latest images. Select an image. Next click "Add Response".

Alternatively, narrow your search by clicking "Search Archive," above, and type specific search terms.

Your input deserves our thanks and praise, for it may help a Gen'er in new and rewarding ways.
Countless unnamed and dedicated volunteers from across the globe deserve our gratitude. They freely offer their time and skills responding to ViewMate requests. Giving to others will come back to them.

Note: Viewmate's first saved image is #227.

To sort by a column, click the column title. Then click the sort icon [D] to reverse the order.
You will be able to view responses online if available. Items will open in a new browser window.

24635 Translation - German

10/17/2012 4:01 PM This image is from the birth records (Geburtsmatrik) of Morina (aka Grossmorzin, etc.). The columns are headed "Eltern (Vater/Mutter)" and "Pathen (Namen/Stand)". An "illegitimate" birth is registered for a baby girl simply called "Maria" - no father's name given, - and the mother is the daughter of my ggggrandfather, Alexander Froeschl. The mother's name seems to be "Barbora," who would have been married at that time to Rabbi Levj (Lowy) KOHN, who I believe to be Maria's father.

I would like a transcription of the contents of the "Namen" and "Stand" columns.

24636 Interpretation

10/17/2012 4:01 PM This image is from the birth records (Geburtsmatrik) of Morina (aka Grossmorzin, etc.) It registers the birth of the first child of my 1st cousin, 3x removed, Barbora FROESCHL and her husband, Lowy (Lewj) KOHN. The "unehelig" column is checked for this child and for the second, who is not even issued a surname. I would like to know if there is any indication in the columns in this image of the reason for the "illegitimate" designation. Is this a Familiant issue? View the post with its 1 response
