Browse the VM archive to view user-generated images of Jewish historical subjects, documents, culture and places, up close. A new response feature now allows you to add your response to those older, often unanswered archived images. Please respond with relevant information when you can. Here's how. Sort the first column (VM ID) by clicking on the column title for the oldest or the latest images. Select an image. Next click "Add Response".

Alternatively, narrow your search by clicking "Search Archive," above, and type specific search terms.

Your input deserves our thanks and praise, for it may help a Gen'er in new and rewarding ways.
Countless unnamed and dedicated volunteers from across the globe deserve our gratitude. They freely offer their time and skills responding to ViewMate requests. Giving to others will come back to them.

Note: Viewmate's first saved image is #227.

To sort by a column, click the column title. Then click the sort icon [D] to reverse the order.
You will be able to view responses online if available. Items will open in a new browser window.

25314 Interpretation

12/26/2012 4:07 PM What is the meaning of the abbreviation shin-yod followed with a slash after the boy's name, Michael, and same abbreviation follows the name of the Sandaq Eiziq. Mohel Benjamin Bing refers to Sandaq Eiziq as "my uncle (dody) in line 2. In another record for Oberseemen, dating to 1803, Sandaq Eiziq's patronymic is included: "son of Moshe." Mohel Benjamin's epitaph states he too was "son of Moshe." Eiziq (Yitzchaq) Bing from Oberseemen was my great-great-great-grandfather. He had a son named Moshe, and at least one grandson by that name. I am hoping that the Shin-yod abbreviation has some relevance to my genealogical research.

25348 Translation - Yiddish

12/23/2012 4:42 PM I believe this letter is from my grandfather, Morris Sugarman, in Meriden, CT, to his finance, Sophie Holman, NYC.
I would like any information about names and locations. We are trying to learn more about the Sugarman's/Tsukerman's.

A full translation would be best, of course.

25343 Translation - Yiddish

12/23/2012 4:42 PM I would like to know what this text says. To me, it appears to be an address; I'd like to know the complete details of what it says. It's on the back of a postcard that was found among the belongings of someone in England (I don't know what photo is on the front, though I don't especially think it's of any significance with respect to the writing). Thank you. View the post, there are no responses
