Browse the VM archive to view user-generated images of Jewish historical subjects, documents, culture and places, up close. A new response feature now allows you to add your response to those older, often unanswered archived images. Please respond with relevant information when you can. Here's how. Sort the first column (VM ID) by clicking on the column title for the oldest or the latest images. Select an image. Next click "Add Response".

Alternatively, narrow your search by clicking "Search Archive," above, and type specific search terms.

Your input deserves our thanks and praise, for it may help a Gen'er in new and rewarding ways.
Countless unnamed and dedicated volunteers from across the globe deserve our gratitude. They freely offer their time and skills responding to ViewMate requests. Giving to others will come back to them.

Note: Viewmate's first saved image is #227.

To sort by a column, click the column title. Then click the sort icon [D] to reverse the order.
You will be able to view responses online if available. Items will open in a new browser window.

22525 Translation - Yiddish

4/22/2012 4:26 PM What is the message printed above the photo? For what sort of occasion would a young man in Europe send such a keepsake to relatives in America? Any guess as to time period? Does the style of dress provide any clues as to geographical origin, level of religious observance, etc.? I believe this man lived in the Suwalk region of Poland. Thank you in advance for sharing your insights. View the post with its 1 response

4/22/2012 4:26 PM I am trying to pinpoint the time frame of this image. I believe it is from somewhere in the Suwalk province of Poland, but I cannot be certain. Also seeking comments about style of dress, socio-economic status, level of religious observance, or any other clues to the lives of those depicted. Thank you in advance. Thank you,

22521 Translation - German

4/22/2012 4:25 PM Page 2 of a series of 8 pages handed to my father at the end of WW II by a man in a town that his U.S. Army unit had occupied. Looking for an accurate translation to determine if these pages are of any interest to Holocaust scholars (and just to know, after all of this time, what they say). View the post with its 1 response

4/22/2012 4:25 PM Page 3 of a series of 8 pages handed to my father at the end of WW II by a man in a town that his U.S. Army unit had occupied. Looking for an accurate translation to determine if these pages are of any interest to Holocaust scholars (and just to know, after all of this time, what they say).

Pages 3 and 4 were pinned together.

4/22/2012 4:25 PM Page 4 of a series of 8 pages handed to my father at the end of WW II by a man in a town that his U.S. Army unit had occupied. Looking for an accurate translation to determine if these pages are of any interest to Holocaust scholars (and just to know, after all of this time, what they say).

This page was pinned to page 3, and seems to be a continuation of that page.

22520 Translation - German

4/22/2012 4:24 PM My father was part of the U.S. occupying force in Germany at the end of WW II. In one town, in 1945, a man handed him some papers. My father did not speak or read German and the man did not speak English. My father put the papers aside and forgot about them until late 2011, when we came across the papers in an old trunk. The papers, at least in part, deal with the Buchenwald concentration camp, so far as I can tell with my limited German skills. There are 8 pages in total. I am looking for an accurate translation to determine if these papers of any interest to Holocaust scholars (and just to know, after all of this time, what they say). 4/22/2012 4:23 PM Does anyone recognize the Photographer's stamp? If so, please let me know the town the photo is taken. It should be in Romania or Bessarabia.

Thank you.
