1/23/2013 9:52 PM Here lies [literaly "was buried"]
The important and modest woman
Mrs. Hanna peace be on her
Loyal wife to xxx Davia Bass of blessed memory
Died with a good name on
The 9th day of the month of Kislev
In the year 5646
And her mother's name [:]Hendel peace be on her.
1/24/2013 5:52 AM I believe the husband's name is Dovid Bass and the date 9 Kislev 5644 (December 8, 1883)
1/24/2013 3:49 PM I agree with 5644, the last letter is a dalet, not a vav, the horizontal stroke is longer and extends to the right. Look at the last letter of "kislev" to see what a vav looks like.
1/25/2013 11:33 AM It appears the "xxx" referred to in another answer is the Hebrew "ha-Rav, indicating her husband, David Bass, was a rabbi.
1/25/2013 12:09 PM Thank you for your responses! I believe the date actually IS the equivalent of 1885 -- that is the date on the paper death entry & in the German portion of this tombstone, but it is possible the engraver could have made an error in the Hebrew date. David Bass was a tavernkeeper, but I suppose it is also possible that he could have come from a scholarly/rabbinic background...
