This is from the death listing of my ancestor Benjamin Hirschmann from Budapest. His town of birth is listed in the middle and I read it as Nagy Csersztoba (the next word means Poland). However, when I searched for any name like this in Poland/Galicia, I didn't find anything. PS - Nagy in Polish is Wielki and in German is Gross and I search with both also, and didn't have any luck. Does anyone have any other guesses/suggestions?

Thanks a lot.

11/14/2012 6:43 PM This name looks to me more like Nagy Csenszto-ba (Csenszto-va?), rather than Csersztoba.
Is it possible that this is a kind of spelling error (or abbreviation) and the person who wrote it actually meant Csensztohova?
That would be today's Czestochowa, quite known town in Poland. The only doubt I have is that it never was a part of Galicia (although the text actually says "Poland", not "Galicia"), and its name never came together with "Wielki" or "Wielka".
I would suggest trying Czestochowa anyway.
11/14/2012 6:49 PM "Csensztoba" would be pronounced like "Tshenstoba", which sounds similar to Polish pronounciation of Czestochowa ("Tshenstokhova"). This is what made me thinking of Czestochowa when I saw this name in Hungarian...
