Hello Caryn,

Just to add to the previous person's response for clarification....

Both Chana Zeisel and her father Reb Chaim Shabtai, HaLevi had double given names. No Hebrew surnames are mentioned.

In the case of her father's designation as a member of the priestly tribe of Kohanim, that is a very important designation. It carries forward from father to son, provided that the child is born of a Jewish mother.

The word "Reb", in front of the double given names, is a title of honor and respect, which some people translate as "Mr". It does NOT imply rabbi.

At the very top of the tombstone, there is a menorah which is a symbol representing the importance of the lighting of candles by the Jewish woman for the Sabbath, holidays, and festivals.

The final line of five Hebrew letters translates to: "May her soul be bound up in the bonds of everlasting life.".

The word used in the top line is "Khashuvah" meaning important not repentant.
It is a common term of respect used on women's tombstones and does not convey importance as such.
One responder included "Halevy".
That is not on the tombstone and would in any case contradict "Hakohen" which appears after her father's name.
Note that HER sons would not be Kohanim, as the status applies to her father and would pass to her brothers if there were any.

I do not understand the date!!!!

I see the 3rd letter as Pei ( same as in 1st word "Niftera)

According to http://www.hebcal.com/converter/?gd=1&gm=12&gy=1920&g2h=Convert+Gregorian+to+Hebrew+date

1 December 1920 = 20th of Kislev, 5681
and yet

20th of Cheshvan, 5681 = 1 November 1920

so there is definitely an error on the stone - a difference of 1 month
