This is a picture of my grandparents, taken around 1940 at a bungalow colony in the Catskills. I am trying to get a more accurate date, so if anyone can translate the headlines on the newspapers or provide any other insight as to when it was taken, I would greatly appreciate it.

7/1/2012 7:19 PM Hello Lawrence,

The newspaper on the right side being held by the lady is "The Forwartz" in Yiddish and called the "Forward" in English. I think that the headline begins with: The Americans are 87 miles from Paris....." I cannot see a date.

On the left side, being held by the gentleman, the newspaper's (approximate spelling) Yiddish name is "Der Morgen Zsournal". In English it is called "??? Journal and Daily News". The Yiddish headline appears to be "??? os troofen nemen.....". I am unable to translate this, and no date is seen.

Hope that this will give you a start and perhaps someone else can fill in on the translation and other details....Jo
7/1/2012 8:14 PM Based on the timeline for WWI the date is early August 1944.
7/1/2012 8:19 PM Thank you very much for the translation. That information was enough for me to find a matching headline from the New York Times, dated August 10th, 1944. I would then assume that this picture had to have been taken some time between August 10th and 15th, 1944.
7/2/2012 1:04 AM The heading in "Der Morgen Zhurnal" held by the gentleman, translates as "U.S. troops take Le Mans".

The heading in the "Forverts" held by the lady translates as "Americans 87 miles from Paris. Assault Brest, take Le Mans, Nantes, and Saint Malo".

All the places mentioned are in France.
The Forverts probably keeps an archive (maybe even online) where you might find the exact date of publication during World War II.

Hope this helps.
