Zhitomir Images
Photos of Public Views and Private Visions

These pictures of modern Zhitomir were captured through the viewfinder of Mr. Vyacheslav Mayboroda of Zhitomir and brought to us with his permission by the efforts of Mr. Alex Kopelberg formerly of Zhitomir and now of Haifa. We also want to thank Mr. Alexander Fesjuk also formerly of Zhitomir but now of the Czech Republic for assisting in this multi-national effort,

The Zhitomir portfolio of Mr. Mayboroda is so prodigious that we begin with five pages, though he sent enough material to make that many again. The pictures were arbitrarily sorted by the webpage creator, Deborah Glassman, into categories. Mr. Mayboroda clearly sees his city as a place of culture and beauty, even in its everyday happenings and we are treated to both the panoramic and intimate views of his city's streets, houses, and public spaces. Dividing such imagery into categories like Houses, Modern Buildings, Street Scenes, Fountains and Monuments, Public Buildings; Monuments and Fountains, Older Commercial Buildings, etc - is naturally going to separate these subjects, more, perhaps than Vyacheslav would have chosen, because of the limited number of pictures that one can place on a page.
