Volhynia Jewish Population List
This Jewish Population list of Volhynian towns was
photocopied from "Evreiskaia (Jewish) Entsiklopedia" published in St. Petersburg
in 1907-1913. The exact year the data was compiled was 1897. These are the population
figures from the "All Russian Census" of 1897. The "Evreiskaia
Entsiklopedia" has tables for the 1897 Census for all gubernias, in the article on
each respective gubernia. Their tables list all towns which had a Jewish population of
over 500.Many thanks to the Sudilkov Online
Landsmanshaft, which contributed this list, and to Yael Driver, who helped us
translate it from the original Russian. The source document is also available for viewing. It is a large image and may take a couple of minutes to
download.
The towns of Sviniuchi, Selitchi Maliya, Slvuta and Slovegno do not show Jewish
populations because the listing reflected a Jewish population greater than the total
population of the town. In one case the difference was greater than 40,000. The method of
data collection and accuracy of all figures is unknown. There were many typos in the
tables. Other sources of the 1897 population data include
"Pinkas HaKehillot". Volume V of the Poland series of "Pinkas
HaKehillot" is the "Volhynia and Polesie" volume (Jerusalem: Yad Vashem,
1990). This work contains the 1897 population figures for each town, and for even smaller
towns than those covered in "Evreiskaia Entsiklopedia". "Pinkas
HaKehillot" covers all towns with a Jewish population of 100 or more.
Another source is Bohdan Wasiutynski's "Ludnosc Zydowska w Polsce w wiekach XIX i XX:
stadjum statystyczne" [Jewish population in Poland in the 19th and 20th centuries].
(Warszawa: Wydawn. Kasy im. Mianowskiego, 1930). 224 pp. Wasiutynski also discusses the
"method of data collection and accuracy of all figures".
