Famous Jewish Volhynians
BIALIK, Haim Nahman, 1873-1934. Born in Radi, in the 1920s Bialik emigrated first to Germany and then to Israel. Bialik was a famous writer, poet, and publisher.
GOLDFADEN, Avraham, 1840 - 1908. The "Father of the Yiddish Theater" was born in Starokonstantinov ("Old Konstantinov"), although professionally he is often associated with Romania. (Thanks to Darren King for this tip.)
Rabbi Dov Ber, 1700 - 1772 , the Maggid of Mezeritch, descendant of the Baal Shem Tov and early Chassidic leader was born in Lokachi (near Horochov) and served as rabbi for a time in Torchin (near Lutsk). (Thanks to Darren King for this tip.)
MARKISH, Peretz, 1895-1952. Born in Polonnoye, he became a famous Yiddish poet. After living in various places in Europe and Palestine, he returned to the Soviet Union in 1926, where he was awarded the Order of Lenin. He was executed in 1952 after being accused of "Jewish nationalism."
Nossen von Prietsk (Beresk), a.k.a. Mordechai Mordesh, who wrote a commentary on "Bier B'Shait" (all names are transliterated by sound). He died in 1584. His daughter married a famed rabbi Hirsch ben Enoch Sundeles(?). (Thanks to Joseph Chandler for this tip.)
