These first two photographs shared by Laura C. Katz, open a little window on Smela, you have it in your power to throw open the doors. Send the pictures, diplomas, military discharges, maps, directories, postcards, records found in archives, records found in drawers - that will make this town's history important! If you have lived in the town (there is still a community of several hundred Jews there and several thousand in nearby Cherkassy,) this site is not only about long-ago history - it is about a Jewish community to whose history you are important. If you have visited here, or your synagogue has sistered a congregation here or your town has become sister-city to the community, let us know what you think we should know about the people and places here.
