The congregation was founded in 1890. Sammy Marks, the millionaire-philanthropist, provided the major portion of the funds for the building. The land was purchased in 1895. Architects: Ibler & Beardwood. Contractor: Krockel. Built in Byzantine style with bulbous onion domes and keyhole archways, red brick and pale ochre intricate details. The façade is dominated by a large Byzantine arch. The cornerstone was laid on 1 December 1897. Dedication: August 1898.
