This is a database of births in South Africa or of ex-South Africans where at least one of the parents has a Jewish sounding surname or where the birth notice in the newspaper indicated that it was a Jewish birth. I am not claiming that the children are Jewish. Some are definitely not Jewish according to halacha.
The information was obtained from the IOL Newspapers website, BMDs on the e-Family website, newspapers which came into my possession and a certain amount of personal knowledge.
Where the date of birth was not disclosed in the newspaper notice or where the date of birth as disclosed in the newspaper notice and the date when the notice appeared were more than a week apart, I have included the date when the notice appeared. Sometimes I am of the impression that typographical errors gave rise to incorrect months. This is especially prevalent where births took place at the beginning of a month.
Where the place of the birth was disclosed in the advertisement but the advertisement appeared in a newspaper which was not in the place where the birth took place, I have included the place where the newspaper was published. Where the place of birth was not disclosed, I have included the place where the newspaper in which the advertisement appeared.
Sometimes the advertisements or the advertisement as it appears on the internet site are worded ambiguously. Thus it is not always clear to me if the first or only surname published was that of the father or the maiden name mother or who are the grandparents, great-grandparents and siblings.
In the above circumstances, I would be pleased to receive information contained in the database that is incorrect or that it can be improved. I will be pleased to add any additional names by request.
