Towns in Kielce and Radom Gubernias

Historical Background:

Radom and Kielce gubernias were two of the ten gubernias (provinces) of the Kingdom of Poland (Russian Poland), from 1867 - 1917.

This area was previously known as the Cracow and Sandomierz palatinates of Poland, which were annexed by Austria in the third partition of Poland in 1795, and became West Galicia.  Austria ceded West Galicia to the Duchy of Warsaw in 1809.  In 1815, the Kingdom of Poland (Congress Poland) was established by the Congress of Vienna, and ruled by the Russian Empire.  At this time, familiar names were re-introduced: Kraków and Sandomierz wojewodztwa (1815-1844), which became Radom gubernia in 1844.  In 1867, Radom gubernia was split into Radom and Kielce gubernias, and those borders remained in place until WWI, when Poland regained independence.

Kielce and Radom gubernias were bordered on the north, east, and west by other gubernias of the Kindgom of Poland:
  —  on the east by Lublin and Siedlce gubernias
  —  on the north by Warszawa gubernia
  —  on the west by Piotrków gubernia
and was bordered on the south by Galicia (Austrian Poland).

Today, the Kielce/Radom region corresponds roughly to Swietokrzyskie Province, south-central Poland, being much of the area between Warsaw and Kraków.  For more information, see the article "Kielce and Radom Gubernias — Geographic History".

Note that the city of Kielce experienced numerous Jewish residence bans throughout its history.  In 1535 the first ban of Jews living in Kielce was enacted.  They resettled the town in 1833, only to be expelled again in 1843.  The Jews returned to Kielce in 1852, but affiliated with the Jewish congregation of Chęciny until 1868, when the Kielce Jewish community and cemetery were established.

The Jewish population of Kielce gubernia in 1897 was 83,200. Radom gubernia had 112,630 Jews.  For population figures for each town, see our town list.
