Two weeks ago, work started on the indexing of the Krakow Liberal Synagogue marriage registers and while this may take several months, we are already carefully considering which holdings at the Jewish Historical Institute should be indexed next.
But we all know that $6000 won’t go too far today. That’s why we are calling it “seed money” because we plan to expand on this project in two ways.
With the completion of each of the holdings, we will initiate fund-raising activities to offset the cost of the work that was done. It will be quite similar to the fund-raising we now do for the Polish State Archives project, where typically those people with an interest in the specific records are asked to help fund the work.
So, as soon as we have an idea of the cost of indexing the marriage registers, Krakow researchers will be hearing from JRI-Poland. And just like the Polish State Archives project, we need an Archive Coordinator for the Jewish Historical Institute project. Until someone steps forward, I will wear that hat. But, I am hoping it won’t be for too long.
