Jewish Cemetery in Krakow

The Jewish Cemetery in Warsaw New Cemetery, ul. Miodowa, 55, Krakow - Burial Register

A photocopy of the New Cemetery Burial Register, Krakow was made available to us by Shoshana Liberman who lives in Holon, Israel. Shoshana and her late husband Jacob bought this volume when they were in Poland in 1991 and brought it back to Israel.

The register covers the years 1922-1939 and 1945-1961, a total of 18,894 entries. For 1922-1939 there is the location of the grave but no date of death, whereas from 1945 on, there is a date of death.

Since the cemetery was desecrated during and after World War II, the grave locations might no longer be valid. There are pieces of matzevahs (headstones) cemented onto the cemetery walls and when the cemetery was "fixed" after the war, the stones that were still intact were placed "wherever" and not put back in their original locations. Since then of course, age and weather have taken their toll on some of the stones as well and some have toppled or have been pushed over.

The New Cemetery is still being used for Jewish burials and it can be visited.
