JRI-Poland now has only one ordering system for acquiring records that have been indexed through JRI-Poland / Polish State Archives (PSA) indexing projects. All PSA Archives branches and sub-branches where Jewish vital records have been indexed and are online now use this “Shopping Basket” system. For more information, click on the links below.

PLEASE DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES TO ORDERS CREATED BY THIS SYSTEM. THE ORDER PROCESSING CENTER CANNOT ACCEPT ORDERS THAT HAVE BEEN AMENDED IN ANY WAY.

The Jewish Records Indexing - Poland database contains indexes of Jewish Vital Records of Poland, generally more than 100 years old (up to approximately 1902). Founded in February 1995, JRI-Poland is already the world's largest database of Jewish vital record indexes accessible over the Internet.

JRI-Poland's database does not contain actual vital records, it contains indexes. With these online indexes, you can quickly determine the source of the actual document, principally records microfilmed by the LDS (Mormons) or those records not filmed by the LDS and available only from the Polish State Archives.

The database does not contain all the vital record indexes for Poland. Today there are more than 2 million records indexed, and more are added each month. It is estimated that, when completed, the JRI-Poland database will index entries to as many as ten million records.

SEARCH OPTIONS

By Surname:

By Givenname:

By Town: Many entries include names of towns of birth, death or living. Town searches may point to unexpected surnames or spellings of surnames in towns of interest. Town searches may also indicate towns that were closely interrelated to your target town. Soundex Town searches may help you identify exact town names of interest when you spot known family names.

Any Field Search: Search for text anywhere on the records. When the Town name is known, it is recommended that you use the exact spelling of the town instead of the Town name search. For towns now in the Ukraine but formerly in Polish Galicia, use the former Polish spelling.

Special Research Option: Soundex searches can bring up many obviously false positives. To force the appearance of a specific letter in the search results, place square brackets [ ] around that letter. The square brackets can be used around any letter in the name but that letter will appear in the same location in the resulting search. . Example: A soundex search for WIDELEC will also generate many results for the surname PETLAK. To force the W, enter the name as [W]IDELEC.

If the search results provide too many entries, you can also geographically narrow the search by entering your choice in the 'geographical restrictions' or latitude-longitude field or the 'miles/kilometer from' field as follows:

To enable you to view surnames with accented characters when they are part of the database, multilingual support is available. For best results, you should be using Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3 with installed Multilingual Support (Pan European) or Netscape version 4 or higher. You may have to select the Central European (Windows - 1250) character set in order to view the data correctly.

PLEASE NOTE: Do NOT enter any accented characters in the search parameters below.
If you do then you will not get back the results you are expecting!

Surviving records less than 100 years old are held in the Civil Records Offices (Urzad Stanu Cywilnego) of each town.

For information on the 20th century records available for your town, visit the Routes to Roots Foundation website, CLICK ON THE 'SEARCH DATABASE' button (on the right side) and enter the town name. Look for the town name in the Repository/City column of the search results. There are typically links to lists of available births, marriage and death records for the town.

Note, however, the Routes to Roots Foundation database may indicate turn of the century records that have already been transferred to the appropriate branch of the Polish State Archives where they can be indexed for the JRI-Poland database.
