On June 15, 2001, the extracts to more than 1,600 deaths in the 1830 to 1840 death register from the Jewish community of Kutno were added to the JRI-Poland database. The story behind this project is a unique one and once more illustrates how cooperation between dedicated individuals and important resources all come together for the benefit of researchers.

The history of the Kutno project

Several years ago, private researcher Petje Schroder (Lodz, Poland) volunteered to fully extract and enter the data from these records as a contribution to the work of the Ronald S. Lauder Genealogy Project at the Jewish Historical Institute (JHI). It was Petje's way of expressing her appreciation for the cooperation received from Yale Reisner and his staff at the JHI in the course of her activities. All researchers with an interest in Kutno and nearby towns and villages are the beneficiary of Petje's generosity.

Special Notes about the Kutno Jewish community death records

• There are no Akt (record) numbers.
  The Page/Position number identifies the location of each record in the register.

• As these are death records, the date of death is the year of entry.
  If there is no date, the mentioned individual was either a relative
  (child/spouse left behind) or a witness. Check the page number.

• Approximate year born is an interpolation made from "age" listed in register.

• ./. Signifies no entry.

• There are a few Protestant entries. These have not been removed so as to provide complete extracts from the register. It is unknown why these entries appear in Jewish community records. Petje has surmised that it is possible that there were very few Protestants in town and that they were not allowed to be registered with Catholics

Surnames in the Kutno death register

As it the standard practice of JRI-Poland, a Surname List has been extracted from the file to enable researchers to scan for names that they may have overlooked or forgotten. The list contains more than 400 surnames and follows at the end of this page.

How to obtain copies of records of interest to you

Because the Kutno 1830 - 1840 death records have been fully extracted, researchers should be aware that the original records will NOT provide additional information. However, in some cases the handwriting was difficult to read in which case, researchers may thus want to study the records themselves. It is also is understandable that researchers may want to have an actual copy of the record for an ancestor.

To order copies of records from the Kutno Jewish community death register, researchers should use the following order form as a guide. Please do not request additional help, such as translations, with your orders. Translations, if required, should be arranged for separately from other sources.

The Jewish Historical Institute will give a quick turnaround time for small orders -- providing they ONLY involve photocopying of SPECIFIED items. To ensure prompt response, all orders should list the records exactly as noted above.

Payment

The Jewish Historical Institute does not have a set fee for photocopies. However, it is naturally expected that researchers will make freewill contributions according to their abilities. Contributions will be used solely for the preservation and cataloguing of Eastern European Jewish archives.
