Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Philadelphia (JGSGP)
Russian Interest Group
|
Many Jewish Philadelphians have roots in the lands of the former Russian Empire, including the modern-day countries of Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine. The Russian Interest Group (RIG) of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Philadelphia is the place to discuss issues of special interest to those researching their ancestors who lived in the Russian Empire (excluding the Kingdom of Poland). Some of the topics we have discussed at our recent meetings are:
- Interpreting Russian-language documents and genealogical records.
- Writing to archives in the former Soviet Union.
- Sources for Jewish migration and emigration from the Russian Empire.
- Finding and visiting your ancestor's shtetl.
The Russian Interest Group meets approximately four times a year. Meetings are generally held on Sundays at the Klein Branch Jewish Community Center, 10100 Jamison Rd. (Red Lion and Jamison Rd.), Northeast Philadelphia. For more information, please contact the RIG Coordinator, David Brill.
See the Calendar for the next or most recent meeting.
