You can search for shtetls and families, locate others who are doing the same, and post your own interest in order to attract exchanges of information. JewishGen offers memberships in and free subscriptions to newsletters from various (SIG) Special Interest Groups in Jewish genealogy-- Geographical areas of interest, etc.
Stephen P. Morse has developed and posted 'front-ends' that ease the search for data in a variety of online databases. These include free databases at Ellis Island and subscription databases at Ancestry.com. His portals are also available from the JewishGen site and at Avotaynu.
Yad Vashem in Israel has established and opened its database of Testimony concerning victims of the Shoah.
Books from the JGSI library are available before and after the presentations at meeting sites. A catalog is available on this website. Suburban libraries have varying genealogical collections. They are members of a library interchange service. Newberry Library is known for its genealogy collection.
