"Genealogical Treasures in Probate Records" - Gregg M. Simon, Attorney - Glick & Simon.
Let an estate lawyer show you how to take advantage of this easily available source. Your ancestors may have probate records even if they did not have money, own property, or have a will. Probate records often have much more information than the will contains. These records may include the deceased's death date and place, family members' names (including maiden names or married names), relationships, and residences, an inventory of the estate, locations of the deceased's property, and adoptions or guardianships for minor children, dependents, or incompetent adults. Don't overlook this important source of genealogical information.

"Ask the Experts" - Try to stump our panel of experts and add some new branches to your family tree! Share your family history research problems to find possible solutions. Topics will include resources, vital records, internet research, genealogy computer programs, publishing, finding ancestral origins, ethical issues, and much more. Join our audience and share your own expertise to help other genealogists.

image Sunday, December 15, 2002: Niles Public Library,
6960 Oakton Street, Niles "Genealogists' Higher Calling: Reaching Out to Family" -- presented by Mike Karsen, JGSI member.
Today's genealogy is becoming high tech and impersonal. Mike Karsen reminds us that genealogy should be about people and relationships. Genealogy provides a perfect opportunity to serve the living by reaching out to family.
image Sunday, November 24, 2002: Niles Public Library,
6960 Oakton Street, Niles "Genealogy on the Internet" -- presented by Harriet Rudnit, JGSI member.
As time passes, more internet sites can help the genealogist begin, organize, and further his/her search for family information. Relevant search engines, programs to record information, and some "must see" sites such as Cyndi's List, JewishGen, Ellis Island database, translators, and Ancestry will be discussed.
image Sunday, October 27, 2002: Highland Park Public Library,
494 Laurel Avenue, Highland Park "Uncovering your Past in Land Records" -- presented by Grace DuMelle of Heartland Historical Research Service.
This often overlooked resource can provide many clues to family history research. Lecture will include understanding legal land descriptions, the federal township and range systems, searching for deeds, mortgages, leases, tax liens, foreclosures, and other related records, and analyzing records for useful information. These records may reveal the wife's maiden name, how the wife received the land (perhaps she inherited from her parents), names and relationships of heirs, family residences elsewhere (useful for locating people between censuses), and more.
