Ava Cohn AKA Sherlock Cohn

Ava Cohn, aka Sherlock Cohn, The Photo Genealogist, is a professional genealogist who brings a lifelong fascination with heirloom photographs and a multidisciplinary approach to photo dating and interpretation. A native of upstate New York, currently residing in the Chicago area, she has a degree from Brandeis University with coursework in decorative arts, art history, and costume history at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

Recognizing the need for accurate dating of Jewish family photographs combined with specialized knowledge of immigrant and Eastern European culture and traditions, she is the only professional genealogist to devote her work to Jewish family photographs. A member of the Association of Professional Genealogists, Professional Jewish Genealogists’ Group, Genealogical Speaker’s Guild, and the Jewish Genealogical Society of Illinois, Ms. Cohn is a popular speaker and writer whose articles have appeared in Avotaynu, The International Review of Jewish Genealogy, The Galitzianer, Morasha, and many other Jewish genealogy publications.

Ava is proud to be the leader in the discipline of Jewish Photo Genealogy.
