The Hausners of Kojetin

Success Story Brings New Family Connections

By Tony Hausner

Hausner matzevah

Gravestone of Joseph and Sara Hausner in Kojetin, Moravia

As a result of the posting of my JewishGen Success Story last year, I have been contacted by two cousins, whom I did not know before.

In the first case, a cousin in Israel saw my article and contacted me by email. We have a common great-grandfather, Emanuel Hausner. We have spoken via Skype and have shared family trees.

In the second case, a probable cousin who lives only 20 minutes away contacted me. He read my article and saw that I had Hausners from Kojetin in the Czech Republic. He also has Hausners in his family from Kojetin. We have examined our family trees and both of us see Hausners in Kojetin in the early 1800s. We have not yet found documentation of a direct connection, but are guessing that our great-great-great-grandfathers are likely to be brothers.

In any event, our immediate families got together for dinner at the cousin's house and shared considerable information and photographs about our families. My cousin and his wife were born and educated in Prague but have lived in the D.C. area for a number of years. Since they travel to the Czech Republic often, they will visit Slovakia and will have a chance to meet the cousins I previously wrote about who I met in Kojetin two years ago. They are particularly interested in the family gravestones and houses that I could show them from my visit to Koejtin that date back to the 18th century.

Thank you, JewishGen.
