The town of Wrexham (in Welsh - Wrecsam), with a population of about 40,000, is in the county borough of Wrexham in north-east Wales, close to the English border. From 1974 to 1996, it was in the Wrexhan Maelor district in the county of Clwyd and, prior thereto, it was a municipal borough in the old county of Denbighshire.
