Newport (in Welsh - Casnewydd), a unitary authority, is the third largest city in Wales, with population of nearly 140,000, and was only granted city status in 2001. From 1974 until 1996, it was a district in the county of Gwent. Prior to 1974, Newport was a county borough in the old county of Monmouthshire. Although the areas that constituted the county of Gwent are now an integral part of Wales, Monmouthshire, though culturally Welsh, was considered to be an English county. Newport lies on the Bristol Channel at the mouth of the river Usk.
