Synagogue Interior, c.
1915
[Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter]
The second of the two photographs presented to the museum in 1933 by Charles Samuels. It shows the synagogue presumably after the restoration of c. 1905, with the ark repainted with black and gold columns and urns, and the gallery columns with stencil decoration in the style of Owen Jones. The commandment boards have been outlined in black. The synagogue is lit by gaslighting. There is a brass plaque to the left of the Ark, now lost, commemorating the ministry of the Rev. Sigmund Hoffnung, whose family paid for the restoration c. 1905.
