County Borough of Neath Port Talbot

The county borough of Neath Port Talbot is a unitary authority created in 1996, by the merger of the districts of Neath, Port Talbot and part of Lliw Valley, that were in the county of Mid Glamorgan and were previously, until 1974, in the former county of Glamorganshire.  Prior to 1974, both Neath and Port Talbot had been municipal boroughs and the part of Lliw Valley (which includes the town of Ystalyfera) had been part of the rural district of Pontardawe.

The town of Neath (in Welsh - Castell-Nedd), with a population of about 60,000, is close to the mouth of the river Neath (or Nedd), some eight miles to the north-east of Swansea.

Port Talbot, with a population of about 50,000, lies on the east shore of the Swansea Bay at the mouth of the river Avon, about seven miles south of Neath. Aberavon, a small market town from which Port Talbot grew, was incorporated into Port Talbot in 1921.

Ystalyfera is in the north of Neath Port Talbot, about eight miles from Neath, located on the river Twrch and the Swansea Canal, close the the border with the county of Powys

Jewish Communities in Neath Port Talbot

From the 1870's, new Jewish communities sprung up in the small towns across south Wales, a number of which are now located in the county borough of Neath Port Talbot. There are now very few Jews left in the region.
