The synagogue is a 12th century building, traditionally thought to be on the site of the Medieval Synagogue. It is believed to be the oldest synagogue in the English-speaking world.

The building has been a Grade I Listed Building since 8 October 1953 (number 1388769). Click here for listing and description on Historic England website. being the only standing medieval synagogue in England.
