1 Louis Street, Leeds 7 (acquired from the New Leeds Congregation in 1933 for 4,000)
Formerly in Byron Street, Leeds.


1891 or 1893

Current Status:

Closed in 1974 - merged into United Hebrew Congregation.
(Was also closed for a short period following a fire in 1966.)


Ashkenazi Orthodox


Became affiliated to the Leeds United Hebrew Congregation for the purposes of burial rights (Jewish Year Books 1935-1945).

1895 - 80 seatholders (Jewish Year Book 1896)
1900 - 93 seatholders (Jewish Year Book 1900-01)
1909 - 75 seatholders (Jewish Year Book 1910)
1946 - 200 members  (Jewish Year Book 1947)
1958 - 200 members  (Jewish Year Book 1959)

Cemetery Data

The burial grounds of the Louis Street Synagogue were at the New Farnley Cemeteries. The section of the cemeteries used by the Louis Street Synagogue was acquired by the congregation in 1896, and was the first section to be established at New Farnley. It is now administered by Leeds United Hebrew Congregation.
