The Ottolenghi Affair


In 1735 we have a glimpse of some of the first Jewish inhabitants of Exeter in modern times. The dispute between Joseph Ottolenghi and his uncle Gabriel Treves came from the proposed marriage of Joseph to his cousin, Gabriel's daughter. Joseph's subsequent conversion to Christianity led to this cause celebre.
