THE JEWISH COMMUNITY IN MID-19th CENTURY BRITAIN©

This database brings together the work of over 300 contributors from around the world. It covers mainly England, Wales and Scotland, but also Ireland, the Channel Islands and Isle of Man. Most, but not all, of its 30,300 plus entries appear in the 1851 census. They represent approaching 95 per cent of the Jewish population in the British Isles at the time.

The aim, for each entry, is to show where the person was and what they were doing across the several decades of their life. A handful of entries go back to the 1750s, or even ‘40s. Another handful lived through to the 1940s, even ‘50s. Alongside the few centenarians are brief records for those who died in infancy.

The core information, available on most but not all entries, is where and when the person was born; their residence and occupation in 1851; their parents’ names; whom they married and when; and their children’s names and birth-years.

Additional information, wherever available, includes occupations and places of residence in other decades through to the 1910s; snapshots of faith affiliation(s) across the person's lifetime; date of death, cause of death and place of burial. There are Notes on, for example, published biographical sources, related people in the database, contradictory data sources etc. Wherever possible source references have been included with each item of data.

 

This database was registered with the Genealogy Quality Code. This means that its editor places considerations of quality above quantity and commercial or other agendas.
