The tradition to name after deceased relatives often enables a researcher to estimate an ancestor's date of death. If, for example, we know that several first cousins born in 1900 were all given their grandfather's name, but that no cousins born prior to that date carried the name, it is safe to assume that the grandfather probably died shortly before 1900.
