+---------------------------------------------------------------------+ ESSENTIAL GEDENKBUCH [MEMORIAL BOOK] +---------------------------------------------------------------------+ A JewishGen InfoFile +====================================================================== Part I, Gedenkbuch 1986 Edition =+===================================================================== The following is an English translation of essential pages compiled by Bernard I. Kouchel, with assistance from translator William F. Hoffman, 1992. Gedenkbuch (Memorial Book) is a register of 128,000 persons who fell victim to the persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany 1933-1945. It includes all those who were categorized as Jews by the Nazis, regardless of whether they were halachically Jewish or thought of themselves as Jews. The notion of "victim" is also fairly broad and not restricted to those who were murdered in concentration camps; among others, it includes people who were driven to suicide. For each victim, the book cites the last known place of residence in Germany (or the place of birth, if the place of residence is not known), the birth date, the death date (if known) and circumstances of death. The book enumerates only victims whose last place of residence (or place of birth) was in that part of Germany which after the war became the Federal Republic (Bundesrepublik, West Germany), or in Berlin (East or West). ___ TABLE OF CONTENTS. p.1823 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ VOLUME 1 Page ~~~~~~~~ Title Page.................................... For first names the maximum length was given, so that in some cases second names had to be abbreviated. --birth name/maiden name (geb.) Column 2: Place of residence: Place of residence or geographical additions that had to be abbreviated due to their length are listed in the index of abbreviations. The notations to the places of residence signify as follows: (1) the place of birth appears instead of place of residence, which was unknown. (2) it cannot be determined whether a place of residence or of birth is involved in a given instance. Column 3: Date of birth: The date of birth is given in abbreviated form which does not specify the century: 46-99 stands for 1846-1899, 00 stands for 1900, 01-45 stands for 1901-1945 Column 4: Date of death: Unknown days and months of death are sometimes indicated by zeroes. --missing (verschollen) --declared dead (fur tot erklart) Column 5: Fate due to persecution: In this column, alongside the deportation destination (sometimes "Destination: unknown") the following are indicated as fates due to persecution: --suicide (Freitod) --euthanasia --unknown (unbekannt) --various (especially victims of excesses in connection with the pogrom of 1938, victims of mistreatment during the course of hearings, etc.) These fates are represented by the addition of "(a)," to which the country in which the victim dies is added, e.g., "Netherlands (a)." The new four-volume register, published 8 May 2006, updates the first edition, from 1986, which listed only victims from the former West Germany. The new version includes all of Germany in the borders of 1937 (i.e. with Silesia and East Prussia, which are now part of modern Poland and Russia, but not Austria) and contains 150,000 names. An included CD-ROM contains all the data of the four volumes. One may e.g. search by birthdate if name spelling is unsure or by any of the other data: first name, surname, maiden name, birthplace, last residence, date of deportation. Umlauts are required for the searches. TITLE: Gedenkbuch.
